"Macros" is short for macronutrients, the three categories of nutrients that provide calories: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Every calorie-containing food is some combination of these three (alcohol technically provides a fourth source, at 7 calories per gram, but it isn't a macronutrient in the traditional sense), and understanding how they convert to calories is what makes a macro ratio meaningful rather than an arbitrary percentage.
The calorie-per-gram math behind each macro
Protein provides 4 calories per gram, carbohydrates also provide 4 calories per gram, and fat provides 9 calories per gram, more than double either of the other two. This is why fat-heavy foods are calorie-dense in small volumes, and it's the exact math a macro ratio is built on: if a plan allocates 30% of calories to fat, that percentage of total calories gets divided by 9 to find the gram target, not divided by 4 like protein or carbs would be.
For example, on a 2,000 calorie target with a 40/30/30 split (carbs/protein/fat), carbs get 800 calories (÷4 = 200 g), protein gets 600 calories (÷4 = 150 g), and fat gets 600 calories (÷9 ≈ 67 g). Why protein targets are often set by body weight instead of percentage
While carbs and fat are commonly expressed as percentages of total calories, protein is frequently set as a fixed amount per kilogram of body weight instead, commonly in a range like 1.6-2.2 g per kg for people doing regular resistance training, since protein needs relate more directly to supporting muscle tissue than to overall calorie intake. There's no single 'correct' ratio
Different macro splits (higher-carb for endurance athletes, higher-fat for some metabolic approaches, higher-protein during a calorie deficit to preserve muscle) all work within the same underlying calorie math, the difference is which macronutrient gets prioritized, not a difference in the fundamental gram-to-calorie conversion. What matters most for most health goals is hitting a sensible total calorie target consistently, macro ratios are a tool for structuring that target around specific goals like muscle preservation or satiety, not a replacement for overall calorie balance, and anyone with specific medical dietary needs should work with a doctor or dietitian on the right ratio for their situation.
