Employee Cost Calculator
Calculate the true annual cost of an employee, including benefits, payroll tax and overhead.
About this calculator
Base salary is only the starting point of what an employee actually costs a business, employer-side payroll taxes, benefits like health insurance and retirement matching, and overhead like equipment, office space and administrative overhead all add up on top of it, and skipping any of these when budgeting for a new hire or pricing out a service leads to underestimating true labor cost, often significantly. This calculator applies Total cost = Salary × (1 + benefits% + payroll tax% + overhead%) to your entered annual base salary and each cost category as a percentage of that salary, returning the total annual cost, the equivalent monthly cost, and a cost multiplier showing how many times the base salary the fully-loaded figure represents. It's built for hiring managers and small business owners budgeting for a new role, or for freelancers and consultants trying to understand the real cost baseline an employer is comparing their rate against, since a salaried employee's true cost typically runs well above the number on their offer letter.
Worked example
$80,000 salary, 20% benefits, 8% payroll tax, 10% overhead
Result: Total annual cost ≈ $110,400 (1.38×)
