About this calculator

Every geometric shape has its own area, volume or surface-area formula, and remembering which one applies (and getting exponents and unit conversions right, especially the difference between squared and cubed units) is where most manual geometry mistakes happen, whether you're estimating paint coverage or a tank's capacity. This calculator applies the correct standard formula for whichever shape you select: area for 2D shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoid), and both volume and surface area for 3D shapes (cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, cone). It expects every dimension for a given shape to be entered in the same linear unit, since it doesn't perform unit conversion, and returns area results in squared units and volume results in cubed units of whatever unit you used. That consolidates what would otherwise be several different lookup formulas into a single shape-selector tool, removing the risk of applying the wrong formula or mixing up area versus volume/surface-area units.

Troubleshooting

    This calculator covers the most common 2D and 3D shapes, for a shape not listed, the general formula for area or volume of that shape can usually be found by searching for its name plus "formula".

  • My units seem off.

    Area results are in squared units of whatever unit you entered (e.g. cm entered gives cm²), and volume results are cubed (cm³), keep your input units consistent across all fields for a given shape.
