Why billable hours are far lower than total working hours
A freelancer working a standard 40-hour week rarely bills more than 25-32 of those hours to clients, the rest goes to proposals, invoicing, admin, marketing, professional development, and the inevitable gaps between projects. Across a full year, accounting for vacation, sick time, and slow periods, many freelancers land closer to 1,000-1,300 truly billable hours a year, roughly half of total working hours, not the full 2,000 the naive calculation assumes.

Hourly rate = (desired annual take-home income + annual business expenses + estimated taxes) ÷ billable hours per year. Say you want $80,000 in take-home pay, expect $10,000 in business expenses (software, insurance, equipment), and estimate $25,000 in taxes given self-employment obligations, that's $115,000 total needed.
