Down Payment Calculator

Calculate the down payment and loan amount needed for a home purchase.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuedown-payment-v1
How this is calculated
Down payment = home price × down payment %. Loan amount = home price − down payment.

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Exact percentage: Uses the down payment percentage you enter as-is, it doesn't check it against a lender's actual minimum requirement for your loan program.
  • No fees rolled into loan: Assumes the loan amount is simply home price minus down payment, with no processing fees or insurance premiums financed into the loan balance.

About this calculator

A down payment percentage quoted by a lender or a friend, say 20%, doesn't mean much as a planning number until it's converted into an actual cash figure against your target home price, and that figure directly determines both how much you need saved and how large a loan you'll be taking on. This calculator multiplies home price by your chosen down payment percentage to find the down payment amount, then subtracts that from the home price to find the remaining loan amount. Two inputs, price and percentage, replace working out the split manually or relying on a lender's ballpark. It's the natural first step before running a mortgage or EMI calculation, since the loan amount it outputs feeds directly into those, and before adding on other upfront costs like stamp duty or closing costs that sit on top of the down payment.

Worked example

₹80,00,000 home, 20% down payment

Result: Down payment = ₹16,00,000; loan amount = ₹64,00,000
