Grade Calculator

Find the score you need on a final exam to reach your target grade.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuegrade-v1
How this is calculated
Required score = (target − currentGrade × (1 − finalWeight)) ÷ finalWeight

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Linear weighting: Assumes the course grade is a simple weighted average of the current grade and the final exam score, with no other assignments or curves factored in.

About this calculator

Before a final exam, the question that actually matters isn't your current grade, it's what score you need on the exam to land where you want, and working that backward from a weighted-average formula means solving an equation for the one unknown, which is easy to set up wrong. This calculator takes your current grade, the final exam's weight toward the overall course grade, and a target overall grade, then solves required score = (target − currentGrade × (1 − finalWeight)) ÷ finalWeight, the algebraic rearrangement of the standard weighted-grade formula isolating the final exam's score. It assumes the course grade is a simple weighted average of your current grade and the final, with no curves or additional assignments factored in. If the required score comes out above 100%, that tells you plainly the target isn't reachable with a perfect final given your current standing. That turns a piece of algebra you'd otherwise have to set up from scratch into an instant answer.

Worked example

Current grade 80%, final worth 30%, target 85%

Result: Required score on final ≈ 96.67%
