About this calculator

Every periodic wave, sound, light, water ripples, radio signals, connects its frequency and wavelength through the medium's propagation speed, but relating those three quantities correctly (and remembering which way the relationship runs) trips people up more often than the arithmetic itself deserves. This calculator computes wave speed from frequency (cycles per second) and wavelength (distance between successive wave peaks), using the fundamental relationship v = f × λ. Enter a wave's frequency and wavelength and it returns propagation speed directly, useful for checking whether a given frequency-wavelength pair is physically consistent with a known medium, sound in air travels at about 343 m/s, so a 440 Hz tone should correspond to a wavelength near 0.78 m. Because the same formula governs any periodic wave regardless of what's oscillating, it works identically for sound, light, and other wave phenomena, though the specific propagation speed differs enormously between them.
