About this calculator
Area conversions come up when comparing a property listing in square feet against a floor plan in square metres, or figuring out how many acres a hectare-denominated plot of farmland covers. Because area scales with the square of a length unit, the multipliers involved (like 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft, or 1 hectare = 10,000 sq m) aren't simple round numbers and are easy to misremember or fat-finger on a phone calculator. This tool converts a value between square metres, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometres, square miles and more by routing every unit through a common base of square metres, so any two units convert exactly. It saves the step of looking up or re-deriving each conversion factor, and avoids the common mistake of applying a linear length conversion factor to an area figure, which silently produces a wildly wrong result.
