Calories Burned Calculator

Estimate calories burned during an activity based on MET value, weight, and duration.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuecalories-burned-v1
How this is calculated
Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 × duration(minutes)

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • MET values: MET values are population averages from the Compendium of Physical Activities; actual burn varies with intensity and individual metabolism.

About this calculator

"How many calories did that workout burn" is a question fitness trackers answer inconsistently and generic online charts answer only for a 70kg reference person, neither is precise for your actual body weight and activity duration. This calculator instead uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) system from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a research-standard reference where each activity is assigned a multiplier of resting energy expenditure, combined with your actual body weight and how long you did the activity, to estimate calories burned with the formula MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 × minutes. Because the MET value stays fixed for a given activity while the weight and duration inputs are yours, the result scales properly to your body rather than assuming a reference weight. It's a more grounded estimate than a flat "burns X calories" claim on a workout app, though actual burn still varies with intensity, fitness level and individual metabolism around the MET average.

Worked example

Walking, 70 kg, 30 minutes

Result: ≈ 129 kcal burned
