Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate ideal body weight from height using the Devine formula.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Minimum height: The formula is undefined below 5 feet (152.4 cm) and this calculator does not support heights below that.
About this calculator
Clinicians needed a quick way to estimate a reference body weight for calculating medication doses, and the Devine formula (1974) became the standard answer, it's still the formula most widely embedded in clinical practice today. This calculator applies it directly: enter your height and sex, and it computes ideal body weight as a base value (50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women) plus 2.3 kg for every inch of height over five feet, then shows a ±10% healthy range around that number. Unlike BMI-based approaches, it uses only height, no weight input at all, which makes it fast but also means it can't account for your actual build. It was designed originally for drug-dosing calculations in adults of average frame, not as a personal fitness target, so treat the output as a population reference point rather than a number to chase. Pairing it with BMI or body fat results gives a fuller picture than either alone.
Worked example
Male, 175 cm
Result: Ideal weight ≈ 70.5 kg (healthy range 63.5–77.6 kg)
