Typing Speed Test
Test your typing speed in words per minute and accuracy.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Word length standard: Follows the typing-industry convention that 5 characters (including spaces) count as one 'word', regardless of the actual words in the passage.
About this calculator
Knowing your actual typing speed — rather than guessing based on how fast typing feels — matters for job applications that require a WPM minimum, tracking improvement while learning touch typing, or just satisfying curiosity about how you compare to average typists. This test has you type a sample passage against the clock, then computes your words-per-minute using the typing-industry standard formula of (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, where every 5 characters (including spaces) counts as one standardized 'word' regardless of the actual words in the passage. It separately tracks accuracy as the percentage of characters typed correctly, since raw speed alone doesn't tell the whole story if you're making frequent mistakes. There's no reliable way to self-estimate typing speed by feel, so running an actual timed test against a real passage gives an objective, comparable WPM and accuracy score instead of a guess.
