Bedtime Cycle Planner
Work backward from a wake-up time to find bedtimes aligned with 90-minute sleep cycles.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- 90-minute sleep cycles: Uses the commonly cited average of 90 minutes per sleep cycle plus 15 minutes to fall asleep, individual cycle length varies somewhat from person to person.
About this calculator
Waking up mid-sleep-cycle is a common reason people feel groggy even after what should be enough hours of sleep, since sleep researchers commonly describe a full cycle of light, deep and REM sleep as lasting roughly 90 minutes, and waking near the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one tends to feel less disorienting. This planner takes your target wake-up time and works backward in 90-minute increments, adding an extra 15 minutes to account for the time it typically takes to fall asleep, to produce several candidate bedtimes, each corresponding to a whole number of completed sleep cycles (commonly 5, 6 or 7 cycles for a full night). Working this out manually means repeated subtraction across cycle counts and remembering to add the 15-minute buffer, easy to miscalculate late at night. The calculator lists all the viable bedtime options instantly so you can pick one that fits your schedule.
Worked example
Wake at 7:00 AM
Result: 9:00 PM, 10:30 PM, 12:00 AM (5, 6, 7 cycles)
