About this calculator

Raw power output alone doesn't tell you much about climbing or racing performance, since a heavier rider producing 300 watts and a lighter rider producing 250 watts can be evenly matched on a climb, which is why cyclists benchmark themselves using watts per kilogram instead of watts alone. This calculator divides your power output, typically your FTP (functional threshold power) from a test or recent race, by your body weight to give that ratio directly, letting you compare yourself against published category benchmarks or track your own progress as you gain fitness or lose weight. It replaces the mental division most cyclists already do after every FTP test with an instant, accurate result, and makes it easy to see at a glance how a change in either power or weight would move your ratio without re-running the math from scratch.
