Decluttering Time Estimator

Estimate how long a decluttering or organizing project will take.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuedecluttering-time-estimator-v1
How this is calculated
Total hours = Rooms × Hours per room (based on clutter level)

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Rough planning estimate: Actual time varies enormously by how much sorting, decision-making, and hauling is involved, use this as a rough planning guide rather than an exact schedule.

About this calculator

Decluttering projects have a way of expanding well beyond what people expect, since sorting through what to keep, donate, or throw away takes far longer than simple tidying, and underestimating the time leads to abandoned half-finished projects with stuff scattered everywhere. This calculator multiplies your number of rooms or areas by an hours-per-room figure tied to your selected clutter level, roughly 1 hour per room if lightly cluttered, 3 hours if moderately cluttered, and 6 hours if heavily cluttered, to give a total time estimate for planning purposes. That scaling reflects how decision fatigue and sheer volume of items compound room by room in a heavily cluttered home, unlike a light tidy-up which is mostly just putting things back in place. It only covers sorting and organizing time, not hauling items away for donation, trash, or resale, which should be budgeted as separate time on top of this estimate.

Worked example

4 rooms, moderate clutter

Result: 12 hours
