About this calculator

Simply multiplying battery capacity by electricity rate underestimates what an EV actually costs to charge, because not all the electricity drawn from the wall makes it into the battery, some is lost as heat in the AC-to-DC conversion. This calculator divides your battery capacity by the charging efficiency percentage to find the actual energy drawn from the grid, then multiplies by your electricity rate to get cost per full charge, and uses your range per charge to derive a cost-per-km figure. It's built for EV owners budgeting home charging costs, comparing electricity tariffs, or working out how an EV's running cost stacks up against a petrol or diesel equivalent. Because charging losses aren't obvious or intuitive to account for by hand, this calculator gives a more realistic cost figure than the naive capacity-times-rate shortcut most people default to.
