  • Constant fuel price: Uses a single fuel price per litre for the whole trip; it doesn't account for price differences between fuel stations or states.
  • Flat mileage: Assumes the mileage you enter holds for the entire trip; it doesn't adjust for driving style, traffic, AC use or terrain, which can lower real-world mileage.

About this calculator

Guessing what a road trip will cost in fuel usually means a rough mental estimate that's off by a noticeable margin, especially once you factor in a vehicle's real mileage rather than its rated figure. This calculator takes your trip distance, your vehicle's mileage in km per litre and the current fuel price per litre, then works out fuel needed as distance divided by mileage and multiplies that by the price to give total cost. It's useful for budgeting a specific drive, comparing the running cost of two vehicles for the same route, or deciding whether a rental car's fuel efficiency makes a trip worthwhile. Because it isolates the three variables that actually drive fuel spend, you can quickly see how much a longer detour, a less efficient vehicle, or a fuel price hike changes the total, something that's tedious to recompute by hand every time one input changes.
