About this calculator
Filling a raised garden bed with the wrong amount of soil means either an awkward second trip to the garden center or a pile of leftover bags taking up space, since soil is typically sold in cubic feet or by the cubic yard and beds come in all sorts of dimensions. This calculator takes your bed's length and width in feet and its depth in inches, converts the depth to feet, and multiplies the three dimensions to get the volume in cubic feet, then divides by 27 to convert to cubic yards for bulk soil orders. Working this out by hand means remembering to convert inches to feet before multiplying and then dividing by 27 for yards, a step that's easy to skip or get wrong. The calculator handles both conversions at once so you know exactly how much soil to buy, in whichever unit your supplier sells it.
