Golf Handicap Calculator

Estimate a golf handicap index from a round score, course rating and slope.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuegolf-handicap-v1
How this is calculated
Differential = (Score − Course rating) × 113 ÷ Slope rating

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Single-round differential: This calculates one round's handicap differential using the official World Handicap System formula, a full handicap index averages your best differentials from multiple recent rounds.

About this calculator

A raw score by itself says little about how well you actually played, since an 90 on a tough, high-slope championship course is a very different performance from a 90 on an easy municipal layout. The World Handicap System accounts for this by converting your adjusted gross score into a handicap differential using the course rating (the expected score of a scratch golfer) and slope rating (a measure of relative difficulty for a bogey golfer), so scores from different courses can be compared fairly. This calculator takes your score, course rating, and slope rating and applies that formula directly, giving you the differential for that single round instantly instead of you tracking down the multiplier and doing the arithmetic by hand. It's the same building-block number your official handicap index is ultimately averaged from across your best recent rounds.

Worked example

Score 90, rating 72, slope 113

Result: 18.0
