Why do gravel and mulch need different bag counts for the same volume?

Because bag sizes differ by material, gravel and sand typically come in smaller, denser bags (around 0.5 cu ft) while mulch bags are larger and lighter (around 2 cu ft), so the same cubic-yard volume needs very different bag counts.

What depth should I use for my material?

Mulch is typically spread 2-4 inches deep, gravel paths and driveways 2-4 inches, and topsoil for garden beds 4-6 inches. Deeper isn't always better, too much mulch can suffocate plant roots.
