About this calculator
Budgeting a construction project without a rough steel figure leaves a major cost line unaccounted for, since reinforcement bar can represent a substantial share of a concrete structure's material cost and varies a lot by which element it's going into. This calculator takes a concrete volume and applies a typical steel-to-concrete ratio (kilograms of steel per cubic metre of concrete) specific to the structural element, slabs and footings need comparatively little reinforcement, while beams and especially columns, which carry concentrated load and bending stress, need proportionally more, to output an estimated steel weight. Instead of hunting down thumb-rule ratios for each element type and multiplying manually, entering the concrete volume returns an instant early-stage estimate you can use for budgeting and material planning. These are planning ratios only, not structural design, actual reinforcement quantity and placement must come from a structural engineer's load calculations for anything beyond a rough budget.
