Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Wastage default: 10% wastage is typical for a simple grid layout in a rectangular room; diagonal, herringbone or intricate-pattern layouts typically need 15-20%.
  • Tile footprint only: Room area is divided by tile face area alone, grout line width is not added to each tile's footprint, a minor simplification.

About this calculator

Tile shortfalls are a special kind of frustrating, dye lots vary between production batches, so a tile bought weeks later to finish a room rarely matches exactly, making it important to order the right quantity up front rather than topping up later. This calculator divides your room area by a single tile's area (length × width) to get a base tile count, adds a wastage allowance for the cuts, breakage and offcuts that happen around edges and corners, and rounds up to the nearest whole tile since you can't buy a fraction of one. Entering room dimensions, tile size and a wastage percentage replaces manually converting units, dividing areas and remembering to round up and pad for waste, each a place a hand calculation commonly goes wrong. Getting the count right the first time also means you can buy from a single batch and avoid a visible colour mismatch later.
