Tile Quantity Calculator

Estimate how many tiles you need for a room, including wastage.

How this is calculated
Tiles = ⌈(Room area × (1 + wastage%)) ÷ Tile area⌉

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Wastage default: 10% wastage is typical for a simple grid layout in a rectangular room; diagonal, herringbone or intricate-pattern layouts typically need 15-20%.
  • Tile footprint only: Room area is divided by tile face area alone, grout line width is not added to each tile's footprint, a minor simplification.

About this calculator

The tile quantity calculator estimates the number of tiles needed to cover a room, given tile size and a wastage allowance for cuts and breakage.

Worked example

150 sqft room, 2×2 ft tiles, 10% wastage

Result: 42 tiles
