Health Insurance Premium Estimator
Estimate a monthly health insurance premium from age, plan tier and household size.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Linear age-rating approximation: Uses a straight-line approximation of the ACA's 3:1 age rating ratio (age 21 = 1.0x, age 64+ = 3.0x), the real HHS default age curve is non-linear between those points.US Department of Health and Human Services
About this calculator
ACA marketplace premiums aren't flat, they're adjusted by age, plan tier, tobacco use, and household size according to published federal rating rules, but applying those rules by hand means knowing exactly where your age falls on a 1x-to-3x scale and stacking multiple multipliers correctly. This calculator applies the real ACA rating structure to a base premium you supply, since regional benchmark rates vary by insurer and area and there's no single national number, it can't look that up for you. Enter your area's base premium (available from healthcare.gov or an insurer quote), your age, plan tier, household size and tobacco use, and it applies the ACA's 3:1 age-rating-band rule (a straight-line approximation of the age curve, which is actually non-linear near the endpoints), a plan-tier multiplier, the maximum tobacco surcharge, and a family-size factor to estimate your monthly premium. It's a rough estimate for budgeting purposes, actual marketplace quotes depend on real insurer rate filings and subsidy eligibility this calculator doesn't account for.
Worked example
$400 base premium, age 35, silver plan, individual, non-smoker
Result: Estimated premium ≈ $572/month
