Moving Box Count Estimator
Estimate how many moving boxes you'll need based on the number of rooms.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Industry rule of thumb: 12-15 boxes per room is a commonly cited moving-industry average, actual needs vary with how much you own and how many items go unboxed (furniture, etc.).
About this calculator
Buying too few moving boxes means a last-minute scramble to a store mid-pack, while buying too many wastes money on boxes and tape you'll have to dispose of afterward, and most people underestimate just how much stuff a single room actually produces once everything is off shelves and out of drawers. This calculator multiplies your number of rooms by a boxes-per-room figure, defaulting to 12, a commonly cited moving-industry average, to give a total box estimate you can shop for ahead of moving day rather than guessing. Since kitchens and garages typically hold far more small, boxable items than a bedroom does, it's worth counting those spaces as 1.5 to 2 'rooms' worth in the input rather than one, for a more realistic total that accounts for the uneven distribution of stuff across a typical home.
Worked example
3 rooms, 12 boxes/room
Result: 36 boxes
