Oven Temperature & Gas Mark Converter

Convert between Fahrenheit, Celsius and UK gas mark oven temperatures.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issueoven-temperature-gas-mark-converter-v1
How this is calculated
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32; Gas mark from the standard UK oven temperature table

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Standard UK gas mark table: Gas marks 1-9 map to the commonly published UK oven temperature equivalents, ovens vary somewhat by manufacturer.

About this calculator

UK recipes and older cookbooks often specify oven heat as a 'gas mark' number rather than a temperature, which is meaningless if your oven only displays Celsius or Fahrenheit, and the gas mark scale isn't a simple linear formula you can convert with basic arithmetic. This calculator converts between all three systems at once: it applies the standard °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 formula for the Celsius/Fahrenheit conversion, and maps to the commonly published UK gas mark table (marks 1 through 9) for that scale, so entering a temperature or gas mark in any one system instantly gives you the other two. It removes the need to look up or memorize the gas mark table when following a recipe from a different country, and helps avoid an oven set 20-30 degrees off from what the recipe intended, which can noticeably affect baking results.

Worked example

180°C

Result: 356°F, Gas mark 4
