Book length is usually listed in pages, which is a poor predictor of actual reading time since page count depends heavily on font size, margins, and formatting, while your reading speed in words per minute is what actually determines how long a book takes. This calculator divides the book's total word count by your personal reading speed to give a total time estimate, using roughly 90,000 words as a typical novel-length default if you don't know the exact count, since most adults read prose at somewhere around 200-300 words per minute while denser technical or academic material is usually read closer to 100-150 wpm. It's useful for planning how many reading sessions a book will realistically take, deciding whether an audiobook at a given playback speed would be faster, or just setting an honest expectation before starting a long book instead of guessing from page count alone.
