About this calculator

Most renters underestimate how much their belongings are actually worth replacing until they try to itemize everything after a fire, theft or water damage claim, furniture, electronics, clothing and everyday items add up fast when priced at replacement cost rather than what you originally paid. This calculator takes rough category totals, furniture, electronics, clothing and personal items, and other belongings, and sums them into a suggested personal property coverage amount to look for in a renters insurance policy. It's meant for renters shopping for their first policy or checking whether their existing coverage limit is actually enough, since many default policy limits are set arbitrarily rather than based on an actual inventory. Because it's easy to forget items when estimating from memory, many people add a buffer on top of their itemized total, and high-value items like jewelry or electronics sometimes need a separate rider beyond the base policy limit.

Worked example

$5k furniture, $3k electronics, $2k clothing, $2k other

Result: $12,000.00
