Steps to Calories Calculator

Convert your daily step count into distance covered and calories burned.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuesteps-to-calories-v1
How this is calculated
Calories = MET(3.5) × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 × minutes walked (at ~100 steps/min)

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Average walking pace: Assumes a walking cadence of about 100 steps per minute at a moderate pace (MET 3.5).

About this calculator

Step counters show a raw number, 10,000 steps, but that figure alone doesn't say how far you actually walked or what it cost you calorically, and both depend on your own stride length and body weight, not a generic average. This calculator converts a step count into two more meaningful numbers: distance, using a stride-length estimate of roughly 0.42 times your height (a common approximation, since taller people cover more ground per step), and calories burned, applying the standard MET formula for walking (MET 3.5 × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes walked), assuming a typical walking cadence of about 100 steps per minute. Enter your step count, weight and height, and it returns both the distance you covered and the calories that likely burned. Because both stride length and cadence are approximations rather than a measurement of your own actual pace, the numbers are estimates, useful for spotting trends across days rather than precise measurements of any single walk.

Worked example

10,000 steps, 70kg, 170cm

Result: ≈ 7.1 km, ≈ 429 kcal burned
