Wallpaper Calculator
Calculate how many wallpaper rolls you need for a wall area.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Standard roll size: Assumes a standard single roll size (~56 sqft), double and triple rolls are sold with different coverage, adjust the coverage-per-roll input to match your chosen product.
- Waste covers pattern matching: The 15% default waste allowance is higher than typical paint/tile waste specifically to cover pattern-matching losses, large-repeat patterns should use an even higher allowance.
About this calculator
Wallpaper needs more waste allowance than paint or tile because patterned rolls have to align between strips, and a roll's advertised coverage figure is based on its raw dimensions, not the smaller usable coverage left after matching the pattern across a wall. This calculator divides your total wall area, inflated by a waste percentage that accounts for pattern-matching losses, by a roll's stated coverage, then rounds up to a whole roll since wallpaper is sold by the full roll rather than a fraction. Enter wall area, coverage per roll and a waste allowance, and it returns a buy-ready roll count instead of you guessing how many extra rolls a repeating pattern will actually consume. Because large-repeat patterns waste noticeably more material aligning each strip than a small or random pattern does, bump the waste allowance from the 15% default toward 20-25% for a bold, large-scale print.
Worked example
400 sqft wall, 56 sqft rolls, 15% waste allowance
Result: 9 rolls
