Asphalt suppliers quote and deliver hot mix by the ton, not by square footage or cubic yardage, so getting a driveway or paved area estimate you can actually use for ordering means converting your area's volume into weight using the mix's density. This calculator multiplies length, width and thickness to get paved volume in cubic feet, then multiplies that by a standard hot-mix asphalt density of 145 pounds per cubic foot and divides by 2,000 to convert pounds into tons. Enter the driveway's dimensions in feet and inches, and the output lands directly in the unit your paving contractor or supplier will actually quote you, sparing you a separate density lookup and unit conversion. Because thickness matters a lot to the final tonnage and residential driveways typically use 2-3 inches over a prepared base while heavier-traffic paving needs more, double-check your planned thickness against your project's actual load requirements before ordering.
