Why does each opening add 4 extra studs?

A typical door or window rough opening needs 2 king studs (full height, on either side of the opening) plus 2 jack/trimmer studs (supporting the header), on top of the studs already counted along the wall's regular spacing.

Does stud spacing affect structural strength?

Yes, 16-inch on-center is the most common residential spacing and matches standard sheet good dimensions (drywall, plywood). Some walls use 24-inch spacing with larger studs for less critical loads, check your local building code for what's allowed.
