About this calculator

Framing a wall needs more than just dividing wall length by stud spacing, every door and window opening adds king studs and jack studs beyond the regular on-center run, and forgetting them is one of the most common framing takeoff mistakes. This calculator divides wall length by stud spacing and rounds up to find the base stud count along the wall, adds one for the starting stud, then adds four extra studs, two king studs and two jack studs, for every door or window opening you specify. Enter wall length, stud spacing and the number of openings, and it returns a total stud count that already accounts for the extra framing openings require, instead of you counting base studs and opening studs separately. Standard residential framing typically uses 16-inch on-center spacing to match standard sheet good dimensions, though some lighter-load walls use 24-inch spacing with larger studs, check your local building code for what's permitted.

• Should I add extra studs for corners and intersections?

  This calculator gives the base field-stud count for a straight wall run, add extra studs separately for corners, wall intersections and any king/jack studs your specific framing plan calls for around openings.

• Why does each opening add 4 studs?

  A standard opening typically needs two jack studs (supporting the header) and two king studs (full-height studs on either side), four additional studs beyond the base field spacing, per opening.
