Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Wall face area only: Counts blocks to cover the visible wall face area, it doesn't add extra blocks for the buried base course, footing, or corner/cap blocks.
  • No engineering check: Doesn't verify wall height against engineering limits for unreinforced gravity walls, taller retaining walls (typically above 3-4 ft) usually require engineered design and permits.

About this calculator

Retaining wall block systems are sold by the unit, and estimating quantity by eye from a wall sketch usually misses either the waste factor or simply miscounts across a long, tall wall face. This calculator multiplies wall length by wall height to get total wall face area, divides that by the footprint of a single block (its length times height), then applies a waste percentage on top to account for cuts and breakage, rounding up to a whole block count. Enter wall length, height, block dimensions and a waste allowance, and get a ready-to-order block count instead of manually working out how many blocks tile a given wall face. It counts only the visible wall face, real retaining walls also need a buried base course, compacted footing and drainage gravel behind them, so budget for those structural elements separately, and get an engineer involved for any wall taller than roughly 3-4 feet.
