Recipe Converter & Scaler

Convert cooking measurements and scale recipes by serving size.

Formula v1.0.0GlobalMethodologyReport an issuerecipe-converter-v1
How this is calculated
Convert: value in ml ÷ target unit's ml; Scale: quantity × (new servings ÷ original servings)

Assumptions used in this calculation

  • Volume-based, not weight-based: Conversions use standard US volume measurements. Results may differ for dense or light ingredients where weight (grams) gives a more accurate measure than volume.

About this calculator

A recipe written in cups and tablespoons is hard to follow with metric measuring tools, and a recipe sized for four servings needs every single ingredient quantity recalculated, not just doubled by intuition, when cooking for a different number of people. This calculator handles both problems: in convert mode, it converts between common cooking volume units (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, millilitres) using standard measurement equivalents; in scale mode, it multiplies an ingredient quantity by the ratio of new servings to original servings to resize a recipe up or down. Recalculating a dozen ingredient quantities by hand for a different serving count is slow and easy to make an arithmetic slip in, especially with fractional measurements like ¾ cup. This calculator gives home cooks a fast, accurate way to convert recipes between measurement systems or scale them to feed exactly the right number of people.

Worked example

1 cup to tablespoons

Result: ≈16 tablespoons
