VAT Calculator
Add or remove VAT from an amount at any rate.
Assumptions used in this calculation
- Default rate is a placeholder: The 20% default reflects a common standard VAT rate (for example the UK); actual rates vary by country, product or service category, and date, always confirm the rate that applies to you.
About this calculator
VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive pricing are both common depending on the country and context, and switching between them by hand means remembering whether to multiply or divide by (1 + VAT%) — get it backwards and you either overstate or understate the tax by a meaningful amount. This calculator takes a net or gross amount, a VAT rate, and a mode (add or remove), and returns the exact converted figure: adding VAT to a net price to find the VAT-inclusive total, or extracting the VAT already baked into a gross figure to find the underlying net amount. Since VAT rates and rules vary considerably by country, from the UK's 20% standard rate to reduced rates for specific goods, this calculator works with any rate you enter rather than assuming a single jurisdiction. It's useful for checking receipts, quoting prices to international clients, or reconciling invoices where VAT treatment needs to be verified quickly and accurately.
Worked example
₹1000 net at 20% VAT
Result: ₹1200 gross
